Common questions

How do I get my uric acid results in?

On the Calendar tab, tap the day the blood was taken, then tap Add in the Uric Acid section. Type the number from your report, and if it is in a different unit from the one shown, tap the unit beside the number to switch it for this result. Choose Lab for a blood test from a laboratory or Self Test for a home meter, then tap Save.

As you type, the app shows whether the reading is at target, above target, or above the level where crystals form. To change or remove a result later, tap the same day again.

The free version keeps two results; Gout Journal Pro removes the limit. Editing a result you already have is never limited. Results are not imported from Apple Health, so each one is entered by hand.

Can I change the units?

Yes. Go to Settings → Uric Acid → Display Unit and choose mg/dL, mmol/L or µmol/L. Every result, chart and summary switches at once, including results you entered in another unit — nothing needs re-entering.

The unit button on the entry screen only affects the result you are typing, so you can copy a number exactly as a lab printed it without changing your setting. The doctor report has its own unit choice too.

Does it sync between my devices?

Yes, through your own iCloud account — there is nothing to sign up for and no switch in the app. Your journal syncs to every device signed in to the same Apple Account. It is stored in your private iCloud, not on our servers.

If a device looks out of date:

  • Check both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account.
  • Check iCloud is allowed for Gout Journal in the iCloud section of the iPhone Settings app.
  • Open Gout Journal on both devices while they are online. Changes usually arrive within a minute or two, but can take longer on a slow connection or in Low Power Mode.

Does it work with Apple Health?

Water syncs both ways. Turn it on in Settings → Water → Apple Health. Water you add in Gout Journal is saved to Health, and water logged in Health or another app shows up in Gout Journal.

Medications are read-only. Turn on Settings → Medication → Import from Apple Health and choose which medications to share. They are added to your list, and doses you log in the Health app appear in Gout Journal. It does not work the other way: Apple does not let other apps write medication doses to Health, so doses logged in Gout Journal stay in Gout Journal.

If you add or change a medication in Health later, tap Review Apple Health Access in the same settings screen to share it too. Uric acid results and pain entries are not shared with Health.

How do I export my data for my doctor?

Go to Settings → Doctor Report. Choose the time period, the unit, whether to include medications, and optionally your name, then tap Create Report. You get a print-ready PDF that you can print, email or save through the share button.

It contains your uric acid chart, a table of every result with lab and home tests labelled, and, for each daily medication, how many days you took it and which days were missed.

The report is part of Gout Journal Pro. You can look through the options before buying. Pain, water and tags are not in the report yet, and there is no spreadsheet export.

I paid — why is the feature still locked?

Go to Settings → Store and tap Restore Purchases. This is the usual fix after installing on a new iPhone or reinstalling.

If that does not unlock Pro:

  • Make sure the iPhone is signed in to the Apple Account you bought with. Purchases belong to that account, not to the device.
  • If you had the monthly or yearly plan, check it is still active under Subscriptions in your Apple Account settings. Pro locks again when a subscription ends.
  • If a parent or organiser approves your purchases with Ask to Buy, the purchase unlocks once it is approved.

Still stuck? Email support@goutjournal.com and say which plan you bought. Payments and refunds are handled by Apple, so we cannot see your card details — or charge or refund you ourselves.

How do I delete everything?

At the bottom of Settings, tap Delete All Data and confirm. This permanently deletes every entry, medication and tag — on this iPhone and, through iCloud, on your other devices. It cannot be undone.

Your settings and your Pro purchase are kept. Water and medications already saved in Apple Health stay there; manage those in the Health app.

Deleting the app on its own is not enough if you use iCloud: your journal stays in your iCloud and comes back when you reinstall. To remove just one thing instead, tap its day on the Calendar and use its delete button, or remove a medication in Settings → Medication → My Medications.

Reporting something medical

Gout Journal records what you enter — it does not diagnose, and it does not recommend treatment. For anything about your symptoms or your medication, speak to your own doctor.
